The Summer Sports Camp, conducted by the Division of Youth Services and the Division of Sports and Recreation, began this week with over 100 participants from seven to 14 years old.

The emphasis of the camp is to learn the basic skills of various sports offered by organizers. “Our young athletes find it difficult to progress to the elite level in sports due to the lack of knowledge and skill in the basics of all sports. This is what the kids need” said Elias Rangamar and Tony Rogolofoi, camp coordinators.

The are two major sessions every morning from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. During morning breaks, special guests are invited to talk about health, hygiene, self-control and environmental awareness. Yesterday morning, Winsor Peter and Laura Flores gave presentations on domestic violence.

During the first two days of camp the participants learned skills in basketball, baseball and teeball. Some of CNMI’s top athletes like Jojo Attao, John Reyes, Joe Mettao, Jovie Omar and Xenavee Pangelinan assisted the children. Volleyball and soccer were introduced yesterday and on Friday, golf, canoeing, track and field, aikido, table tennis and tennis will be introduced.

The Division of Sports and Recreation staff would like to acknowledge the JTPA trainees, volunteers and DYS for their tremendous support in making the event possible.

The Sports Camp ends on July 29, 2000.
