Two licensing boards move to Capitol Hill
The Medical Licensing Board and Nursing Licensing Board marked the opening of their new joint office on Capitol Hill yesterday.
The transfer to House No. 1336 is expected to give the two boards greater autonomy in approving and monitoring health care professionals throughout the Commonwealth, according to Public Health Secretary Joe Villagomez.
“The licensing boards are the foundation for ensuring quality health care and proper credentials for professionals in the Commonwealth,” Villagomez said. “In some respects, they’re responsible for policing the Commonwealth Health Center to ensure we follow proper procedure. Now that we’re no longer sharing space at the hospital, they can do their job better.”
Mr. Villagomez says the boards are also expected to receive their own legal counsel from the Attorney General’s Office, which will prevent any conflict of interest that may arise from the boards receiving assistance from CHC’s counsel, as they have been.
Yesterday’s opening was highlighted by the issuance of the first license from the new location. Roca Quitugua, the first local mid-wife in the Commonwealth and a recent graduate of the Fiji School of Nursing, personally received her professional registered nurse license from Liz Torres-Untalan, chairperson of the Commonwealth Board of Nurse Examiners.
