Kosrae wins; RMI women take bronze,
Kosrae 57, Chuuk 49
Majuro –– The final day of Outrigger’s Micronesian Basketball Tournament 2000 started yesterday with a session between the men’s teams of Kosrae and Chuuk.
Kosrae defeated Chuuk 57-49 to take 5th place overall. Tulen Skillings led Kosrae with 13 points and 8 steals. Other contributors for Kosrae were Daniel Palik (11 points), Brightwell Youngstrom (10 points), and Burt Weilbacher (10 points). Chuuk’s Keitani Graham led all scorers with 17 points. Graham also had 5 steals. Jonathan Newthon (10 points) and Henri Mori (15 rebounds) were other game notables for Chuuk.
RMI 60, Chuuk 36
In the women’s bronze medal game, RMI coasted to a 60-36 victory over Chuuk. It was a lopsided contest as RMI went on a 14-0 run to start the game.
RMI’s relentless full court pressure forced early turnovers and missed shots, keeping Chuuk from scoring until seven minutes into the game. Chuuk came within 9 points of the lead when Kimberely Graham hit one of two from the free throw line with 13 seconds left in the first half.
RMI took its 30-21 halftime advantage and increased it the second half with a consistent execution on offensive and aggressive play on defensive. The game was over early, and RMI coasted to a bronze medal. It was RMI’s first medal placing ever for both men and women’s basketball teams.
RMI’s Georgina John took the Player of the Game Honors with 15 points and 6 steals.
Trisha Wase (8 points and 10 rebounds), Candice Guavis (12 points), and Krystal Mino (8 points and 6 steals) were notable contributors for RMI’s winning effort.
Chuuk’s Melba Stinnett led all scorers with 16 points. Stinnett also had a near triple double, grabbing 12 rebounds (8 offensive) and taking 7 steals. Graham’s double of 12 points and 10 rebounds also contributed for Chuuk.
