Teno asked to report state of Commonwealth
House leaders will press Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio to deliver his annual State of the Commonwealth address, which has yet been scheduled at this time, to determine the health of the CNMI government.
Ways and Means Committee chair Rep. Rosiky F. Camacho yesterday asked Speaker Benigno R. Fitial to communicate with the governor to set a date for the constitutionally-mandated address.
“[We want] the governor to come up and tell us what is our status.,” the representative told reporters yesterday after the start of the House’s second regular session.
“I want to hear what our business situation is, our resources, revenues and the schools’ [needs], almost anything,” added Mr. Camacho, stressing it is the responsibility of the governor to inform the islands of the present conditions.
Mr. Tenorio delivered his address last year on June 3 during a joint House and Senate session at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Susupe. It coincided with the holding of the yearly State of the Washington Office Report.
The traditional address highlights the achievements of both offices as well as current status of the CNMI in economic, political and social fields. It also provides recommendations and steps that lawmakers must consider for action into the next year.
Last year’s report tackled the economic difficulties confronting the islands since 1997 and the attempts by the Clinton administration to strip the Commonwealth of its control over local immigration, minimum wage and customs standards.
