The Northern Marianas Council for the Humanities, in cooperation with the Public School System, will be sponsoring the annual Teacher’s Institute in Marianas History beginning the first Saturday of September.

It is organized to provide historical background in particular to new teacher’s in the school system, including discussions about how the Commonwealth was created. Institutes will cover three major areas of history: prehistory, colonial history and modern history leading to self-government.

During the course, there will be field trips, experts in specific areas such as archeology, linguistics, genetics and presentations by people who have had personal experience to which they are willing to share with teachers and other participants.

Many of the experts who participated in last year’s Institute will be returning for this one. A set of reading materials appropriate to each session will be distributed to the participants.

The sessions will take place only on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Pacific Gardenia hotel conference room. The first series (prehistory) will take place on Sept. 2 and each Saturday afterwards until Sept. 23. The second series (the colonial era) begins on Sept. 30 and each Saturday thereafter until Oct. 21. The final series (the drive for self-determination) will begin on Nov. 18 through Dec. 9.

The Institute is free and open to the public, however, teachers will be the priority. Full participation in all the sessions will meet the Public School System history requirements for certification. In addition, those participants who wish to get college credit for the course may do so through the continuing education program at the Northern Marianas College.

Interested persons are encouraged to call the Humanities Council office at 235-4785 for advance registration.
