Apia (Samoa Observer/PINA Nius Online) – The much anticipated $50 million European Union (EU) Rural Water Supply Project is finally underway. Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi opened the EU- funded project at the Fulausou Treatment Plant. The project, which is expected to take two and half years to complete, aims to upgrade the water distribution system from Faleula-uta to Samatau.

This will be the first phase of the project. It will then move to Savaii, where water supplies from Palauli to Puapua will be upgraded. On completion, the project will ensure a consistent supply of quality water to villages supplied by the water distribution system. This is something that Tuilaepa was particularly happy about.

It is the fervent wish of the government to consistently supply clean water to all parts of Samoa, Tuilaepa said. He noted that it was extremely important to make sure that the water supply is clean and meets the required health standards. Tuilaepa also emphasized the government’s constant efforts to prioritize water development projects, because he believes water is an important component of everyday life.

He urged all Samoans to work together to protect and preserve Samoa’s precious water resources. Water is an important part of the environment, remarked a representative of the EU, Mr. Steve Rodgers. Speaking on behalf of the EU office in Samoa, Mr. Rodgers said it was important to ensure Samoa’s water supply was clean and adequate. Clean water is a must for everyone especially for people who live in rural areas.

Mr. Rodgers admitted the process of getting the project underway was indeed lengthy. However, he believed this had been necessary, as the proper route had to be taken to ensure the project’s smooth implementation. The project will be carried out by the PIHL/RORBYG Joint Venture from Europe and Denmark for $50 million. Its is expected to be completed before the end of 2002.
