Suva (Fiji’s Daily Post/PINA Nius Online) – Senior State lawyer Rachael Olutimayin said Fiji’s children are safe after the Fiji Court of Appeal upheld the State’s appeal against convicted pedophile Mark Lawrence Mutch. And in the process the Court of Appeal increased his seven-year sentence to 10.

Mutch, an Australian expatriate who had been working in Suva, was last year convicted by the High Court in Suva for two counts of rape and indecently assaulting children. Ms. Olutimayin said: “We have to be happy as a country because the court has protected our children and they are safe. This was in an important decision for our society and our children.”

Mutch, who had seemed confident all the way, turned pale as the judges read their verdict in a packed court room. The prosecution alleged the offenses were committed at the Mutch’s house against five young girls aged from 9 to 15 at different times over a period from 1990 to 1197.
