The Issue: The resurgence in the use of “ice” (methamphetamine hydrochloride) in paradise.

Our View: The NMI can no longer afford self-denial in the use of this drug that ruins families.

It is rather alarming to learn that methamphetamine hydrochloride otherwise known as “ice” or “shabu” has re-invaded these isles over the last year or so. How this drug returned in resurgent fashion and peddled by “dealers” is most troubling.

History shows that over the last decade (1990s), “ice” had literally ruined some families here. Such was the case as a result of the destructive effects of this drug on the user, not to mention its prohibitive cost against family pocket books.

Once tightly held families suffered disintegration when both parents turned addicts in the use of “ice”. Virulent behavior is inflicted against spouses and children. In the end, not only do we see families falling apart, but young children and their mothers become victims of a habit that end up in the forced sale of even treasured jewelry or family property to meet the user’s vice.

Such virulent family environment is far from conducive in building filial stability that is passed on to young children who themselves are willing to learn their roles and responsibilities as they grow up. Under such an environment, violence becomes a daily meal that forces young children to question if this is what life is all about. In more ways than one, violent users (often times parents themselves) have unconsciously contributed to the ruination of young minds, their very own children.

If the family unit is the very basis of any society, then let it be known right here and now that the use of “ice” isn’t the right ticket to forging brighter tomorrow for our children. Your children deserve something better than a rocky and unstable beginning in a family setting that is supposed to be filled with love and care, not unsolicited violence. For once, let us proactively partake in ridding these isles of a destructive drug by reporting king pins and peddlers. Si Yuus Maase` yan ghilisow!
