Brostrom named MBL’s most valuable player
The best players in the Masters Basketball League were given due recognition during a special awarding ceremony held at the Kilili Beach over the weekend.
Richard “Doc” Brostrom was awarded the most valuable player award for the play-offs. Brostrom was leading in the scoring, block shots, & rebounds category.
Brostrom who played his 5th season with coach Tony Sablan was one of the main players for GTE Pacifica. Brostrom was not only playing center, he sometimes plays the shooting forward position.
According to coach Sablan, Doc is not only known for his aggressive play but also for his famous turn around jump shots. Despite being over 35 years old, Doc continues to play basketball at par with his younger counterparts.
Awards were also given to the following players for their excellent performance during the last league: Llyod Hartman- Regular Season MVP (NMC Fakpi), Rebounds Champion, Block Shot Champion; Mark Rozic- Scoring Champion (Len’s Bar); Orly Catayong- Steals Champion (Doritos), Assistant Champion (Doritos); Joe Pangelinan- Coach of the Year; Mike Muna- Manager of the Year; and Team “Y”- Sportsmanship Award.
The awards were presented by Congressman Diego Benavente and League Sponsor Mobil Oil Micronesia’s Tom Anitok.
After the awarding ceremony, the table was opened for the players, coaches, & team followers to culminate the much awaited Bar-B-Q Party.
The next MBL season will start on February 2001 in order to give the teams enough time to prepare and look for sponsors, said MBL President Joe Pangelinan .
