The Issue: George W. Bush was sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States.

Our View: We say “Hail To The Chief” and offer our most profound congratulations!

President George W. Bush reclaimed the most coveted trophy of the presidency from the man who took it away from his dad eight years ago last Saturday. He is the 43rd president of the United States of America. Congratulations, Mr. President!

However remotely situated these isles may be, most people from this side of the Pacific were routing for a George W. victory. It was frustrating dealing with the Clinton administration where we sought, but failed to secure equal application of laws and policies. We hope to see this experience or sore relationship turned into a closed chapter under the Bush administration.

Meanwhile, local leadership ought to make it a point forthwith to meet with the Secretary of Interior-Designate Gale Norton. She’s a believer of “local control” which augurs well with the very premise of the Covenant Agreement on our rights to self-government. Now is the time to make our preliminary visits, including rallying behind Ms. Norton’s nomination for Secretary of Interior.

It should be understood too that many of our friends then are no longer with the US Congress. Most have retired and left a void on the essence of the Covenant Agreement to new members.

How fortunate we are that the two most powerful members of the US House of Representatives saved us up from ruination because they too believe in less government. They both hailed from Texas: Congressmen Tom DeLay and Dick Armey. How great the new triad of Bush, DeLay and Armey.

We are optimistic that between Pennsylvania Avenue and Capitol Hill being under the control of the GOP, we would see better days ahead in rebuilding our relationship with the federal government premised on the very essence of the Covenant Agreement. After all, this is Americana! Again, our most profound sense of congratulations to President Bush and members of the US Congress. Bien felis and congratulations!
