USS McCain holds community service
Navy destroyer USS JOHN S. McCain pulled into Saipan Harbor yesterday for its second visit to the island in less than a year. Under Commander Jeffrey Harbeson and is homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, the McCain has a crew of about 300 sailors.
The McCain has volunteered for two community relations projects during its liberty call on saipan. Today, Hopwood Junior High School and the Tanapag Elementary School will host groups of volunteers to assist with painting and other projects on campus.
On the athletic front, a basketball game between the visiting sailors and local players will be held tomorrow at 4:00pm at the Ada Gymnasium. Friendly competition will continue with a softball game Sunday at 6:30pm at the Ada Gym softball field.
The McCain last night hosted a private reception on board. Commander Harbeson has also announed the ship will be open for public tours daily from 10:00am to 6:00pm until its departure Monday.
Visitors are advised that all bags and purses will be searched upon boarding. The McCain joins USNS San Jose in port. The San Jose arrived on Saipan last Wednesday.
