Recognizing the exemplary contributions of women in the society, Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday proclaimed March as CNMI Women’s History Month.

Led by Special Assistant to Women’s Affairs Anna Teregeyo, women from various agencies in the government flocked the Governor’s Office to witness the proclamation signing.

Saying that behind every successful man is a woman, Mr. Tenorio noted how women advanced their position within the workplace dramatically over the past decades, including their contributions to arts, education, politics, and economic development of the Commonwealth.

“As wives and mothers, we devote ourselves to teaching our spiritual norms, moral values, and traditions to our children, which provides stability and a strong foundation for our cultural identity and pride in the community,” the proclamation reads.

Ms. Teregeyo, on the other hand, solicit the support of women in the Northern Marianas to come out and participate in various activities slated in celebration of the Women’s Month.

She said the diversity of cultures and traditions in the CNMI makes it especially appropriate that women should come together and share in celebrating their strength, talents in the arts, unity, and devotion to family and cultural values.

“We wish to encourage women of different ethnic groups and backgrounds to come together and share their many differences as a way of learning and teaching each other about their diversities and the many common experiences,” Ms. Teregeyo said.

March has been proclaimed as National Women’s History Month around the world to celebrate international solidarity among women and to recognize women’s struggles for equality and suffrage.

This is the 13th year that March is being celebrated as such by various groups of women in the CNMI who joined together in the spirit of unity and cooperation to provide forum where women’s needs and aspirations can be addressed.

Also yesterday, the governor signed February 24 through March 2 as Fish and Wildlife Resources Appreciation Week in efforts to educate the community on the conservation of fish and wildlife resources.

The governor noted that these resources provide the community to learn about and participate in the efforts to preserve the fish and wildlife resources that contribute so much to CNMI’s heritage. (EGA)
