Stearns, Mccullough win Laguna Regatta
The Saipan team of Tony Stearns and Janet McCullough retained their championship in the 26th Annual Laguna Regatta held over the weekend. The A fleet of experienced sailors consisted of 4 teams from Japan and 3 teams from Saipan. The B fleet consisted of 4 teams from Saipan.
Sailing conditions for Saturday were perfect with winds of 15 to 20 knots, sunny skies and flat seas inside the Tanapag lagoon. The strong winds provided some exciting and challenging racing, with 4 teams experiencing capsizes of their boats.
The first day of racing consisted of 4 races, with Stearns/McCullough scoring 3 first places. For the B fleet, the team of Fernando Estella and Dennis Tababa were leading in a very close contest.
On Sunday, the winds settled down to 10 to 15 knots which provided excellent sailing conditions for all teams.
In the A fleet, Stearns/McCullough continued to dominate, but the competition among the other 6 teams tightened up with positions changing throughout each of the 4 races.
In the B fleet the competition was even closer, with the team of Lisa Black and Antonio Ibara winning the final 2 races to take out overall first place.
