Engineers from the Northern Marianas joined their peers throughout the mainland United States in the celebration of the National Engineers’ Week, which fell between Feb. 18 and 24.

The event is celebrated each year around George Washington’s birthday — February 21. National Engineers’ Week is an annual event to help raise public awareness and appreciation of engineers and their work.

The event recently concluded its 50th year last month.

Mr. Washington’s skills on agriculture, military and land surveying led to him acquiring the title of the nation’s first engineer. From transportation to education, Mr. Washington’s engineering vision proved to be ahead of his time.

Some 35,000 engineers throughout the US will reach out to more than three million students and teachers. Their goal is to help bring practical applications of math, science, and technology to the classroom and to increase student interest in these subjects.

Efrain Camacho, president of EFC Engineers, stated that it is important for the profession to reach out to young people and get them interested in engineering so that the CNMI will have an adequate supply of engineers in the future.
