When will drunk drivers ever learn?

An intoxicated driver may have possibly learned his lesson the hard way after a life-changing incident yesterday when his car crashed into a flame tree across the Horiguchi building along Beach Road.

Yuan Li, 31, sustained general abrasions and fractures on the left and forearm from the auto-tree collision. His blood alcohol concentration was found by police to be more than the double .08 percent legal level.

His passenger, however, was not as lucky. Chinese national Xhan Liang, 33, suffered fractures on both legs, head injuries, and a hematoma on his right eye, police records said.

Mr. Liang has been admitted to the Commonwealth Health Center Intensive Care Unit ward. As of press time, Mr. Liang is reportedly still in a critical condition.

According to preliminary investigation by the Department of Public Safety, spokesperson Cecil Celes reported Mr. Li’s 1997 Toyota four-door sedan was traveling southbound when it swerved to the shoulder of the highway and struck a flame tree, just meters away from the abandoned fish market building.

Police assessed that the cause of the crash was due to driver error, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The vehicle sustained extensive damages to the front right portion and side portion, including the under carriage, authorities said. (MM)
