The Mount Carmel School Theater Club is geared up for the premiere of its next dramatic production, William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, which has been re-written for a modern, local audience by the Mount Carmel School Class of 2001.

Shakespeare’s timeless comedy shows what happens when lovers get mixed up with one another and mayhem ensues. The play opens with Margarita and Julio, who love each other, but are forbidden to be together by Margarita’s mother, who wants Margarita to marry the rich Dabid.

Forced by the island governor to marry Dabid, Margarita flees to Tinian to be with Dabid. However, Percilia (who loves Dabid) plays her role by telling Dabid of Margarita and Julio’s plans, thus sending Dabid to Tinian, whom Percilia follows.

Confused yet? While on Tinian, two fairy leaders, Plumeria and Matgas, are involved in their own little lovers’ spat, which ensnares the human lovers in a messy web of love potions and mixed-ups.

And to add to the chaos, a group of untalented actors try to rehearse on Tinian in the middle of the human and the fairy love wars. How the play ends throws the audience into a frenzy of laughter.

Take this convoluted story and adapt it for local, modern audience, with language and humor that everyone can understand, and have the recipe for a roaring good time.

The show is the Theater Club’s tenth production since the club began five years ago.

Past shows include three classics by William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet (May 1997), Much Ado About Nothing (January 1998), and Macbeth (May 1998); two musicals, White Christmas (December 1998) and Grease (January 2000); a student written collection of vignettes, Legends of the Marianas (May 1999); a contemporary drama, Our House (October 2000); and a Christmas favorite, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (December 2000).

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will run on Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5. Each show begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Commonwealth Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe. Admission for each show is $5.00 for all audience members. For more information, call 235-1252.
