The A’s came back from being down by as much as 6 runs to beat the struggling San Roque D-9ers 8-7 in the Saipan Big League action last Thursday at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
With the victory, the A’s improved their record to 6-3, which ties them with the Hustlers on top of the league standings.
Heading into the 5th inning, the D-9ers had control of the game as they posted a commanding 7-1 lead.
The A’s would however pull within striking distance as they scored 5 runs on 4 hits in the inning.
The game took a huge turn in the bottom of the seventh inning as Ray Dela Cruz of the A’s reached base on a costly throwing error by D-9ers second baseman Jason Castro.
Dela Cruz would then advance to second on a wild pitch, and later stole third.
With the tying run just 90 feet away, Franklin Muna came up to the plate and connected for an opposite field triple. Muna later scored the winning run when the dangerous Billy Jo Camacho, who leads the league in batting, drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The D-9ers have one more chance to post a victory and erase their 0-8 record when they face the Tanapag Braves tonight. The Braves, who are currently 5-3, can force a three-way tie at top of the standings with a victory.
“This year’s Big League is very competitive,” said Mike Borja, who is the Assistant District Administrator and also the League’s Assistant Coordinator for the Big League Division.
He also added that tonight’s game will be the decisive one, and will also conclude the 2002 regular season.
