More than 600 participants joined hands to raise funds for the CNMI Chapter of the American Red Cross on its 16th Annual Relay For Life Walk-a-Thon held simultaneously on Saipan, Tinian and Rota Saturday.

NMI Chapter Chair Jocelyn Deleon Guerrero said over 400 walkers registered as early as 5:30am on Saipan while initial reports disclosed that Tinian gathered 85 participants and Rota drew over a hundred walkers.

Registration began at 5:30am but late registrants were expected to finish the 10K Walk, which started in Susupe, around 11am. Registration fee was $15.

The annual 10K Walk also gathered volunteers from public and private elementary and high schools in the Commonwealth. The event also netted the assistance of several private organizations such as Bank of Hawaii, Bank of Guam, Fil-American Saipan Jaycees, IT&E, PacificCare, Pena House, Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association, Pacific Subsea, and Shell Marianas among others.

Guerrero said the annual 10K walk hopes to raise $25,000 which will be used for Red Cross volunteering works in the Northern Marianas. Last year, the walkathon raised $32,000.

“Proceeds of the fund raising will stay in the CNMI to support all services of the Chapter,” she explained.

Only recently, the American Red Cross donated $27,000-worth of food, clothing, cleanup kits, among others to 103 victims of a fire that gutted an apartment in San Antonio.

The American Red Cross is also committed to providing education and volunteering opportunities for the Island’s youths. The NMI Chapter supports and helps fund the “Masters of Disaster” elementary school program to increase awareness and understanding of natural disasters.
