Filipino workers in the Commonwealth who did not file their income tax returns for 2001 at the Philippine Consulate General have nothing to worry about since overseas workers are exempted from filing their ITRs beginning last year.

The consulate reiterated yesterday that, based on the new regulations of the Philippines’ Bureau of Internal Revenue, Filipino workers and seamen are not required to file their ITRs regarding income derived from sources outside their country.

The Saipan Tribune has been receiving inquiries from some Filipino workers regarding the late filing of their ITRs.

The consulate cited Revenue Regulation No. 5-2001, as basis for overseas Filipino workers ‘s exemption for the filing of ITRs beginning taxable year 2001.

Based on the information obtained from the consulate, though, the workers are still required to file their ITRs for the three preceding taxable years prior to 2001. (John Ravelo)
