The Division of Environmental Quality yesterday cautioned beachgoers to temporarily refrain from three beach sites on Saipan due to bacterial contamination.

The DEQ said the beach sites contained excessive concentrations of enterococci. The beach sites are the Sugar Dock, Garapan Fishing Dock and South Puerto Rico Dump.

The DEQ advised the public to stay away from within 300 feet of the beach sites to address public health concerns.

It said the bacterial contamination could indicate the presence of animal or human waste in the waters, but added that the situation could have been caused by stormwater runoff flowing into the beaches.
