The Languages and Humanities Department is the largest academic department at NMC. It offers a variety of courses and is currently divided into five divisions.

The English Language Institute, the largest division of the department, offers courses in all language skills—listening/speaking, writing/grammar and reading/vocabulary development. It also offers courses from the very beginning levels, for students new to the English language, all the way up to the advanced levels, for students nearly ready to meet the reading and writing challenges of the full range of NMC’s course offerings.

The College English program is the second division of the Languages and Humanities Department. It offers English Composition 101 and 202. Composition 101 gives students extensive practice in the techniques of expository writing and also introduces them to the writing of research papers. These skills are necessary to successfully complete most of the courses at the college. English Composition 202 is an extension of 101, helping students to further refine their research and writing skills.

The third division of the department consists of our Chamorro, Carolinian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, and American Sign Language courses, offered at elementary and more advanced levels. Many degree programs at the college require students to complete a modern language course, and any of these will satisfy that requirement.

The fourth division of department houses post-secondary level courses in communications, literature, and humanities. We will be expanding this division in the Fall 2004 Semester with new course offerings in mass media and world religions.

Last, but not least, is the department’s new program in second language/ foreign language instruction. Students completing this program will be granted a certificate of Achievement in Teaching a Second Language/Teaching a Foreign Language.

Most Languages and Humanities Department courses are offered both during the day and in the evenings to accommodate the schedules of the entire CNMI community.

The Languages and Humanities Department is ready to welcome you, too, to Northern Marianas College.
