HANMI donates $7K to 4 civic groups
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands yesterday donated funds to four civic groups as part of the association’s community outreach program.
HANMI chairman Ronald D. Sablan and top executives of major hotels handed out checks worth $1,750 each to the American Red Cross, Karidat, the Commonwealth Health Center’s Volunteers Association and the CNMI Crime Stoppers.
Sablan said the funds were raised in a golf tournament sponsored by HANMI at the Coral Ocean Point last April 3.
“We do this fundraiser to assist charitable organizations,” Sablan said, adding that the donations totaling $7,000 represent 50 percent of collected proceeds from the event.
Sablan said, however, that the net profit from the event reached $16,000, although only $14,000 have been collected so far. Gross proceeds reached some $32,000, he added.
Sablan said the remaining 50 percent of the collected proceeds would be kept by HANMI for future assistance to civic groups in case emergencies arise.
Assisting Sablan in handing out the donations were Dai-Ichi Saipan Beach general manager Mark Swinton, Hyatt Regency Saipan general manager Michael von Siebenthal, Saipan World Resort general manager Byung Ku Park, and Niizeki International Saipan Co. Ltd. general manager Ed Salas.
Salas, the chairman of the tournament’s 12-man committee, thanked those who supported the fundraising event, including private businesses and the COP.
Representatives of civic groups in the ceremonial fund turnover held at the Pacific Gardenia Hotel in Chalan Kanoa included Red Cross executive director John Hirsh, Karidat official Angie Guerrero, Crime Stoppers chair Jim A. Arenovski, and CHC Volunteers’ Kim Prinz, Rita Tenorio and Amparo Tenorio. Also present at the funds turnover ceremony were police Sgt. Tom Blas, the Department of Public Safety’s coordinator to the Crime Stoppers, and Securewest operations manager Zahid Islam. (John Ravelo)
