Hofschneider tops class at UC Berkeley
Estelle Hofschneider, daughter of Amy and the late Hedwig Hofschneider, has recently received her bachelor’s degree in Classics and in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
Hofschneider, who graduated from Marianas Baptist Academy in 2000, graduated summa cum laude and was the student speaker at the graduation ceremony for the Department of Classics.
In addition to receiving the highest honors, Hofschneider also received the Classics department’s Citation for Distinction in the Major. This top award, which includes a certificate and a $250 prize, is awarded to one student annually. Each year, the undergraduate advisor, in consultation with the chair, reviews the records of departmental majors and presents the records of up to top three candidates to the faculty for selection of the single recipient of this award.
Hofschneider’s work in the major include a research apprenticeship at the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri, which houses the university’s papyri collection from the site of ancient Tebtunis, Egypt. She was awarded by the university a summer stipend in 2003 to continue her work at CTP. In the fall of 2003, she received a Classics Scholarship for study abroad in order to continue her studies at the UC Study Center in Rome, Italy.
Her other activities included coordinating a one-unit course for students through the University’s Career Center, an internship at the Student Legal Clinic and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and a research assistantship at the Discrimination Research Center in Berkeley.
She is currently enrolled in a two-year masters program in criminal justice at Buffalo State College, after which she plans to attend law school.
