On Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, the Marianas High School Dolphins MY WAVE Tourism Club participated in a beach cleanup called “Cash for Trash” along the beach side of Sugar Dock to World Resort.

“Cash for Trash” was created by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce to encourage people to pick up trash and plant trees in certain areas and get money in return.

The Marianas Tourism Education Council advisers said that the activity had to be canceled due to bad weather but MY WAVE Club adviser Timothy Faska insisted that we should still clean up, rain or shine.

“Last year’s event was ten times worse, yet we persevered and succeeded,” said Faska. “We’ve done this before—Let’s go!” The students started at 8am and finished at 10:30am.

The rain was coming down hard, but the students did not give up. They had raincoats. Along the way, daok trees, provided by the Forestry Division of the Department of Agriculture, were planted behind the Saipan Grand Hotel and World Resort Saipan.

Jose DL Guerrero, owner of J&K Marine Sports, entertained the students with his bird Atao. Donald Crisostomo and the Saipan Mayor’s Office, assisted in transporting the trash to the landfill.

After cleaning up the beach, the students went to their MY WAVE Student Headquarters at MHS and enjoyed the lunch that Dai-Ichi Hotel food and beverage manager Tom Welch provided for them.

The clean up was a great success! Go Dolphins!
