Commander John Davis of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Saipan Post 3457 announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW “Patriots Pen Essay Competition.”

Students in grades 6-8 from the Commonwealth have the opportunity to compete in the annual essay competition and win thousands of dollars in U.S. savings bonds and a trip to the VFW National Convention.

Students begin by competing at the Post level. Post winners advance to District where they will compete with contestants from Guam. District winners then compete at the Department, which is the Pacific Areas. The Department winner will compete for more than $66,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds and an all-expense paid trip to join other national dignitaries attending the VFW National Convention.

Students are invited to write a 300-400 word essay on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “What Service to Our Country Means to Me.” The deadline date for student entry is Nov. 1, 2004.

Interested students and teachers should contact the Patriot’s Pen Chair at Post 3457 by phone 235-4839 or fax 235-4830 or contact Davis at 235-5123.
