Reno Celis has a new nickname.

Celis earned the moniker “Sunshine” after carding the best score in the Refalawasch Golf Association September Ace of the Month Tournament held last Sept. 18 at the Kingfisher Golf Links last.

Celis took time off from his hectic schedule playing basketball, baseball, softball and even scuba diving to fire a net score of 9-under par 63 to capture the monthly title. His net score obliterated the 6-under 66 recorded by Alex “SUV” Aquininoc during the September qualifier.

Many thought Celis had already hung his golf hat and pawned his clubs for good but surprised everyone with a 41 in the front and 37 in the back for a gross score of 78.

Celis, who showed up in the greens sporting a new haircut, went on to defeat the likes of par-busters Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho, Tony Satur and Eddie “Fast” Peter. An eagle on the par-5 13th hole highlighted his round.

Hot on the heels of Celis was Joe “Chuparim” Wabol, who in spite of his senior citizen category shot a gross score of 12-over par 84 to hold on to second place with a net score of 65.

In the closest to the pin competition, Peter and Camacho took home the honors on the 6th and 12th holes, respectively. All winners walked away with cash prizes and plenty of stories to tell for the following weeks.

RGA is reminding all members that the October Ace of the Month Tournament will be held tomorrow, Oct. 16, at the Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort.

Tee time is set for 7:30am but participants must check-in 30 minutes earlier at 7am for registration and pairings. RGA has room for 16 players for the monthly tournament. The score to beat is the 3-under par 69 carded by Jordan Kosam last Saturday, Oct. 9, also at the COP.

Members are also encouraged to come out early and fine tune their golf swings, eliminate unnecessary strokes and get themselves ready for the 2004 RGA Turkey Shootout, scheduled for Nov. 13.

For more information on the RGA and its upcoming tournaments, please call Jess Wabol at 286-8717, Tony Satur at 322-1562 and 888-3324, or Sonny Flores at 234-1748. (Mark Rabago)
