More checkpoints this week
The Department of Public Safety Traffic Section announced yesterday that it would conduct sobriety and occupant protection checkpoints this week as part of efforts to deter and detect drunk and intoxicated drivers, as well as ensure that all vehicle occupants are protected.
According to the Traffic Section, each checkpoint will last an hour and 15 minutes at each location.
The occupancy checkpoints would be conducted this Thursday, Nov. 11, with the first setup along 2W Highway in Tapanag by Top Fashion. The checkpoint will begin at 9:15am and end at 11am.
The second setup will be on Beach Road Susupe by the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, from 3:30pm to 4:45pm.
DUI sobriety checkpoints will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, with the first set up on the Chalan Monsignor Guerrero Road in San Jose by the Sablan Building from 7:30pm to 8:45pm.
A second checkpoint would be conducted on Beach Road Chalan Lau Lau by Triple J Motors from 10pm to 11:15pm.
The Traffic Section also said that officers would be performing highway criminal interdiction, saturation patrols, aggressive driver interdiction, and laser activities.
Traffic Section is required to conduct a minimum of 12 sobriety checkpoints per year.
Statistics provided by the Traffic Section indicate that 254 DUI arrests were made in the first nine months of this year, majority of which involved males.
Off the 254, over 25 incidents involved motorists under the legal drinking age of 21.
Also, a total of 63 traffic related accidents this year involved motorists driving under the influence.
