11 quakes jolt NMI in a week
At least 11 earthquakes shook portions of the Northern Marianas in less than one week.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quakes from Wednesday last week until last Tuesday. The tremors’ intensities ranged from 4.4 to 6.0 on the Richter scale.
The most recent earthquake had an intensity of 5.1 and shook the islands past 6am Tuesday. The USGS located the tremor’s center about 100 miles southeast of Saipan, 115 miles east of Rota, and 160 miles south-southeast of Anatahan.
The event followed a 4.4-intensity tremor that occurred almost 6pm Saturday. This tremor, meanwhile, was located about 90 miles southeast of Saipan, 110 miles east of Rota, and 155 miles south-southeast of Anatahan, and had a depth of about 41.6 kilometers.
The strongest among the recent earthquakes to hit the islands was recorded on Wednesday last week at about 6:31pm. The USGS located the 6.0-strong quake about 90 miles southeast of Saipan, 110 miles east of Rota and 150 miles south-southeast of Anatahan. It had a depth of 10 kilometers.
The USGS recorded at least two earthquakes last Thursday, and seven others on Wednesday last week. The Thursday quakes occurred during the wee hours and early morning and registered intensities of 4.6 and 4.5, respectively.
On Wednesday last week, the series of tremors began with a 4.7-strong quake about 2:44pm. At 6:13pm that day, a 4.6-intensity quake shook the islands and was succeeded by six other events after short intervals.
According to the USGS, the 6.0-strong tremor and other earthquakes that had intensities 4.5 to 5.2 followed that event.
