Employees of the Northern Marianas College trounced their rivals—the students—to win the 2nd Annual Global Trivia Challenge held at the Student Center yesterday afternoon.

In an event intended to test the minds and wits of students and employees, the employees team garnered the most number of points to take the award.

The participants were tested in four categories—people and products, marvelous Marianas, historic happenings, and planet Earth.

Representing the teachers and staff of NMC were English instructor Vince Riley, Lynn Moore, librarian Laura Hohmann, accounting instructor Perry Connor, and Ed Lieberman.

Representing the students were Phi Thetta Kappa members Zack Berger, Zhi Yu Liang, Kuan Yuan, Lucy Lu, and Claudagh Pascua.

Student Activities and Leadership director Edwin Propst was on hand as host of the event.

As each questions were asked, the team had to beat the other in ringing the bell placed in front of them before answering the question. If the answer given is wrong, the other team would have a chance to answer.

Winning three points for his team, Riley was quick to the draw in answering the first question: What is the biggest industry in Saipan during the 1930s? “Sugar,” he blurted out.

Questions ranged from “Where are pineapples originally from?” to “Who might use a seismograph?” The teams were also asked which country consumes the most beer per capita. Germany, Lieberman said. Ireland, the students guessed. Both teams got it wrong. “The right answer is Czech Repubic,” said Propst. “The average Czech downs 155 liters of beer per year.”

With 16 points on the table, the NMC employees bagged the Budweiser merchandise, gift certificate for lunch at the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach, and a day to cruise on one of Budget Rent-a-Car’s vehicles.

The students ended up with five points—good enough to keep them confident for next year. (Cassie DLG Fejeran)
