Satur helps Proa clinch pennant
The pummeling powers of Proa devastated the D-9ers with a 13-run fourth inning to repeat as pennant champions of the Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball League Tuesday night at the Oleai Sports Complex softball field.
Led by the ageless arm of pitcher Tony Satur, Proa won their 11th win of the season via the 10-run mercy rule, 16-6.
Satur allowed six runs (five earned) off of 14 hits over five innings of play, and with only one game left on the schedule for the regular season champs, his earned run average is a mere 2.99.
The Proa offense gave the menacing pitcher plenty of support with 16 runs off of 14 hits in the contest, led by slugger Tony Luzama. The Proa centerfielder led the charge with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, recording four singles, two scores, and two runs batted in.
Catcher Manny Sablan poured on the offensive with a pair of base knocks and a double, as the “Pudge” of Proa racked up four ribbies and a plate crossing. Teammate Jester Garcia was walked more times than a dog with a small bladder, as he went 1-for-2 with three scores to take the league lead with 21.
The game was close, as Proa held a 3-2 lead going into the top of the fourth inning before opening up a 13-run can of hurt on the D-9ers to put the game away for good.
The only team to beat Proa this year was the C-Bees Four, but the chances of seeing them upset Proa in the playoffs is now a thing of the past. With their third forfeited game of the season, C-Bees Four are no longer eligible to compete in the regular season or the playoffs.
The removal of the team will not affect the players selected for the All-Star team, as they will still be permitted to represent the CNMI in the Mini SPGs in Palau.
While the news is less than pleasant for the blue and gold, the door to the playoffs is now open for either the Islanders or Kagman 1-2-3. Whichever team finishes with a better record will advance to post-season play.
