Brostrom, Johnson top divisions
Bradley Brostrom upset two-time defending champion Lucas Knecht, while Sarah Johnson continued her dominance in last Saturday’s final Kids TRYathlon of the year in Marpi.
Eleven-year-old Brostrom topped the boy’s 10-12-year-old division. He crossed the tape in 30:32 after coming up with a 4:06 in the 200-meter swim, a 15:38 in the 6-kilometer bike, and a 10:48 in the 2km run.
The son of Richard “Doc” Brostom, medical director of the Department of Public Health, had so-so times in the first two splits before coming up with a long-busting effort in the run. Brostrom goes to school at Saipan International School.
Knecht came less than a minute later with a time of 31:14. The 11-year-old from Calvary Christian Academy was first in the swim (3:19) and bike (15:23) portions of the race before slowing down in the run (12:32).
Settling for third place was Cooper Graf, who checked in with an overall time of 32:31. The 12-year-old finished the swim in 3:10, negotiated the bike course in 16:46, and accomplished the run in 12:35.
Johnson, for her part, was first in the girl’s 10-12-year-old age group. The 12-year-old Saipan International School student came in with an overall time of 34:27 after doing her splits superbly.
She was first out of the water in a time of 3:20 and was also tops in the bike with a flat 18:00. She capped it all off with another first-place performance in the run, which she finished in 13:07.
Emma McCullough-Stearns was second in the division after arriving at the finish line in 35:54. The 11-year-old from Whispering Palms School came up with time of 3:46 in the swim, 18:25 in the bike, and 13:43 in the run.
Third place went to 10-year-old Dominique Austin, who got the job done in 38:03. She churned the water in 4:10, pedaled for 19:20, before abusing her running shoes in 14:33.
The other participants in the age group were Madison Schultz (45:40, 5:47 swim, 24:02 bike, and 15:51 run) and Aloisuis Troost (35:58, 3:12, 17:40, and 15:06).
In the team competition, Zoe Jewell and Madison Smith topped the field with an overall time of 37:25. Jewell swam in 4:52 and did the bike in 23:35 before turning over the reins to Smith, who had a time of 13:50 in the run split.
Tomorrow, Saipan Tribune will report about the winners in the other divisions of the last leg of the 2004 Kids TRYathlon series.
