Marshallese begin title defense

Marshallese volleybelles kicked off the defense of their volleyball crown by beating a couple of Marianas teams last Monday in the 3rd Pacific Rim Youth Goodwill Tournament at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
Dubbed simply as Marshalls I, the defending champs of the girl’s 18-and-under division defeated Dragons and Tinian Grace Christian Academy. Marshalls I nipped Dragons in three sets 25-23, 22-25, 15-10, and then laid waste to Tinian GCA 25-22, 25-18.
In other games in the age group, Tinian Youth swept Marshalls II, 25-18, 25-19; She Devils torched Saipan Southern High School 25-8, 25-10; Tinian Youth beat Saipan South High 25-18, 25-8, and She Devils outplayed Marshalls II 23-25, 25-9, 16-14.
Tinian GCA and Marshalls II were originally grouped under the girl’s 14-and-under division, but the lack of teams in the division forced organizers of the PACRIM to lump them together with the rest of the 18-and-under teams.
In the boy’s 18-and-under division, Shag leads the way with two wins against no loss. Tinian is second in the standings with a 2-1 record, while Guam and Saipan Southern High School bring up the rear with standings of 0-1 and 0-2, respectively. Monday’s lone match in the age group saw Tinian run over Saipan Southern High 26-24, 25-14.
