PSS set to acquire typhoon shutters, vehicle
The Public School System is taking a pro-active approach to stymie the damage on its facilities inflicted by seasonal typhoons hitting the CNMI.
The PSS recently announced that it would soon be acquiring typhoon shutters, which it would deploy to select schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
Instructional materials, according to the PSS, are usually the first to go during typhoons and torrential rains because school facilities lack shutters to keep water out.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is said to have earmarked funds for the acquisition of the said typhoon shutters to mitigate the damages incurred by schools on the islands.
PSS associate commissioner David M. Borja said, “The mitigation funding that’s coming is to allow us to purchase shutters so that when the wind comes we just close the shutters.”
The prebid conference for the typhoon shutter acquisition was held on Jan. 14 at the PSS conference room. Deadline of submission for the bids is no later than 10am of Jan. 28.
In a related story, the PSS and Board of Education will soon come out with another bid—this one for the purchase of a new service vehicle.
The Governor’s Office issued a memo last week transferring $15,000 to the PSS and BOE for the acquisition of the new vehicle.
“Once we get that money transferred to the PSS or BOE all other accounts can go for the bidding,” added Borja.
PSS and the BOE cannot process the bid requirements until the money has been transferred to the PSS, Borja noted
He also said the reason why the acquisition of the service vehicle has to go through a bidding is because the money involved is more than $10,000. Procurement regulations, he said, stipulate that equipment or materials greater than $10,000 should go through the bidding process. (Marconi Calindas)
