Children’s author sits down with Lab School kids

Teri Sloat, an author and illustrator of more than a dozen children’s books, recently visited the Northern Marianas College Laboratory School to talk with the school’s students about her books and explain the process of transforming an idea into a book.
Sloat, along with her husband Bob, visited the College Lab School on Jan. 17.
She shared with students how an idea or an actual event can be developed into a story and then becomes a book. The couple also demonstrated some of the techniques they use when drawing illustrations for a book.
On her website, Sloat says that visiting young people at schools and festivals “is one of my favorite ways of staying in touch with the energy and creativity of young people and their teachers and librarians. I like to talk—that’s why I write, so I will talk about myself and what I have learned from my own children.”
The Sloats currently live in California but they have also spent a lot of time in Alaska. Some of the titles of her books reflect their interest in the Alaska Northwest.
