The new season of the CNMI Billiards League gets rolling when the B League kicks off tonight, Feb. 1, and the A League gets hostilities on the green felt table going the following night, Feb. 2, in separate venues.

Organizer Fred Prinz said they have also decided to change the name of the CNMI Billiards League to the 2005 Budlight Billiards League to signify the CNMI Billiards and Darts Association’s new partnership with the beer’s distributor, MARPAC.

Prinz said because of the explosion of interest for billiards on Saipan, he has also decided to hold competitions twice a week, one for A League and the other for the B League.

“Because of the number of teams registered this season we are splitting the tournament events into two nights—Tuesday for the up-and-coming pool players and Wednesday for established cue artists,” he said.

Like last year, participating teams will represent sports bars. The participating sports bars for the 2005 Budlight Billiards League are Club Chicago, Club USSP, Corner Pocket, and Da Place, according to Prinz.

Behind a school of pool sharks, led by Roger Espiritu and Jerry Soriano, Verizon wiped the floor clean with second-place Man Fotten Gaga to win the 2004 Fall Season of the CNMI Open Billiards League.

It was a tighter contest in the CNMI Billiard League with Hyatt Troops holding back the late charge of Hazmat to win the championship of the B division.
