Continental Micronesia President and Chief Executive Officer Mark A. Erwin was named the 2004 Business Person of the Year by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce. Erwin was honored at a dinner in Saipan on Feb. 19.

The Business Person of the Year award recognizes business executives who have contributed to the community while demonstrating proven leadership and business growth. The Chamber has bestowed the award every year since 1996.

Erwin began his career with Continental nearly 30 years ago, and was named Continental Micronesia President and CEO in 2002.

At the awards dinner he was lauded for his leadership in the face of a series of challenges beginning with Supertyphoon Pongsona and continuing with SARS, the Iraq war and the rising cost of fuel. Continental Micronesia has grown under Erwin’s guidance with the introduction of non-stop service from Saipan to Manila, Taipei and Hong Kong, as well as the launch of Continental.

Connection commuter service between Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands last summer which increased capacity and lowered fares in the market. The airline also began daily non-stop service between Nagoya and Honolulu last December and will begin twice weekly Hiroshima-Guam service this April.

In his acceptance speech, Erwin credited Continental Micronesia’s employees with the company’s continued success and long standing presence in the islands. “In my opinion, this is really in recognition of the 1,500 employees in Micronesia who do their jobs everyday. I am very honored to represent them in the Chamber,” Erwin said.
