Sixers I double up on Sparks
With returning veteran Mike Eclevia taking the lead role, the San Antonio Sixers I sent a strong message to other teams that they’re a team to be reckoned with after doubling up on a younger Matansa Sparks squad, 48-24, in the ongoing Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League.
The Sixers I took the As Matuis court by storm, breaking out to an early 10-4 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
After scoring only a field goal in the opening quarter, Eclevia went into a zone of his own and took over the outing, tormenting the Sparks with 12 points to lead San Antonio to a comfortable 20-point breathing room at the break, 28-8.
The Sixers I would continue to build on their momentum at the start of the third behind a combined eight-point effort by Eclevia and Jesse Blesoch, outscoring the Sparks 12-6 to stretch their advantage to 26-points, 40-14, with only one period remaining in regulation.
The Sparks would not go down without a fight, though, and managed to put up a better performance, however, their charge came a little too late as the Sixers I still closed the match in commanding fashion.
Eclevia was hot all night and torched the nets for a game-high 18 points, while Alvin Salas supported with eight points for the Sixers I.
Ray Babauta and Juan Ogarto paced the Sparks with eight and six points in a losing cause.
IVYBL action continues today as the Sixers II take on Hopwood Junior High School at Koblerville court. Kagman then battles the Tanapag Young Warriors at the Tanapag Basketball Court tomorrow to wrap up the first week of action in the 2005 season. All games are scheduled to tip-off at 6:30pm.
A total of eight teams make up the cast of this year’s competition. Aside from those already mentioned, other teams suiting up for the 2005 season of the 14-and-under league are last year’s runner-up 69ers and defending champion Garapan Rollers.
