Warriors tame Cougars at home
The Tanapag Young Warriors gave their fans much to cheer about at their home court last night, edging a determined Kagman Cougars squad, 23-18, in the ongoing Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League.
Kagman held a slim advantage at the early goings, leading 6-5 after the first eight minutes of play, with Chris Caliwan leading the way with four points.
Tanapag, however, charged back to knot the score at 9-9 in the second period. But a layup by Ghel Mark Cabrera, a free throw by Edwin Camacho, and a bucket after a steal by Caliwan would propel Kagman to a five-point advantage at the break, 14-9.
After a little pep talk from their coaches, Mario Aguon and Jovie Omar, Tanapag came rolling back in full force, going on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 14-apiece.
Tanapag continued to run on all cylinders and kept Kagman scoreless the entire quarter to head into the final stanza with a 19-14 lead. Ike Aldan and Jerome Mira were superb, accounting for numerous rebounds, with Aldan also chipping in five points at the offensive end.
Kagman tried to launch a comeback behind the guns of Caliwan, Camacho, and Nick Muna, but misfired on several opportunities.
Mika would pump in four points in the last minutes to seal the deal for the Tanapag.
Aldan led Tanapag with a game-high nine points, while Mira and Josh Gorde contributed seven and five points, respectively.
Caliwan paced Kagman with seven points, while Camacho and Cabrera finished with five and four points, respectively.
