Two days after keeping pace with No Fear, the Managaha Chiefs lost a close game to the underrated Shag to slip into third place on Wednesday night in the Island Wide Volleyball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Oleai.

Shag (7-6) played a solid game with one of the league’s top teams, and after two sets, the score was identical with each team both scoring and allowing 45 points apiece, but they were able to dig deep to find the necessary “umph” to win the deciding third set 15-7 top upset the Chiefs (10-3).

With the win, Shag topped the .500 mark once again in this season of inconsistent play, but they now seem to elevating their game as the teams surge toward the playoffs. Kaycee Rengaelur led his squad with three kills in the clutch sets, while Mike Olaitiman had a pair of kills in the match for Shag as well.

No Fear (11-1) capitalized on the Chief’s miscue by knocking off the NMC Proa (4-8) in another match that went down to the wire, as Gabriel White willed his team to a victory with six kills in the two sets that they won.

After dropping the first set to the Proa 25-16, No Fear bounced back to pound Proa 25-13 by scoring 12 kills overall and a pair of unreturnable serves by “Hammerin’” Hank Magofna.

They stuck with the power game in the third set by thundering down kills for 10 of their 17 points in the clincher, but they still barely survived the Proa who racked up 15 points off of five kills and an ace.

Roy Kaipat sent five kills in the final two sets, while teammate Elias Saralu sara-slammed four kills in the same timeframe.

The wall-shaking action that thrilled the fans in both of the games was matched by the letdown experienced by volleyball junkies as the Floaters (3-11) and Monarchs (0-12) forfeited their games to the Chuukanos (6-5) and Lost Boyz (12-2), respectively.

The bumps, sets, and spikes of the Island Wide Volleyball League return to the rubberized surface of the Ada Gym next Monday, March 7, 6:30pm.
