Man charged for alleged assault on disabled woman
Police arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly attacking his common-law wife, a person with disability.
Joseph Besebes, also known as Joe Ngirbokteng, faces assault and battery and disturbing the peace charges.
Police arrested him several days ago after the victim complained that her husband physically abused her last weekend. Superior Court judge David Wiseman imposed a $3,000-bail on Besebes and ordered the defendant to stay away from the victim if he posts bail.
Police detective Andrea Carr Ozawa said the woman has been confined to a wheelchair after having a stroke several years ago.
The detective said the woman was sleeping with her 7-year-old daughter last Saturday when she was awakened by smoke coming from the kitchen, where Besebes had left the food he was cooking.
When Besebes arrived at the house, he and the woman argued. The detective said that Besebes threw a pillow at her and pushed it over her mouth.
“This made it hard for the victim to breathe and she struggled to get free,” the detective said.
The woman managed to go to her wheelchair, but was told by Besebes to go back to bed. Besebes allegedly pushed the wheelchair, causing her leg to hit a table.
The following day, when the woman’s 14-year-old son prepared lunch for her, Besebes instructed the boy not to feed her, the detective said. Besebes allegedly told the boy that he only needs to feed her dinner.
