A garment factory worker became the latest victims of a purse-snatching incident occurred in broad daylight in San Antonio Sunday, police said yesterday.

The victim, a Chinese woman whose identity police did not reveal, lost her wallet containing $700 to a still unidentified man. The wallet also contained important identification cards, including the woman’s Social Security card.

Citing results of an initial investigation, Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David said the suspect suddenly grabbed the woman’s wallet from her hand while she was walking near Sako Corp.’s factory.

The suspect was wearing a brown shirt and a brown baseball cap at the time of the incident. David said the suspect ran in a westerly direction toward the Her Joys apartment, after which the victim lost sight of the robber.

The incident is one of several purse-snatching incidents victimizing garment workers in San Antonio. There is no police substation in the area.

Despite the manpower shortage at the DPS, David said there is enough number of policemen assigned to patrol the San Antonio area.

“We have sufficient manpower to cover this field assignment,” he said, but he did not disclose the number of policemen assigned to man designated zones on Saipan.

According to the DPS, there are currently only 44 policemen patrolling Saipan’s roads to ensure public safety. Thirty-three policemen belong to the patrol section, while 11 others work for the traffic section.

But David said that the creation of the Thief Apprehension Select Coalition a few years ago would help curb the incidence of theft and robberies on the island, including the San Antonio area.
