Who says a penny cannot get you anywhere? It may not be true to some but for the Division of Youth Services, a penny could go a very long way.

In commemoration of the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month, DYS launched its annual Penny Drive last March 7 and is scheduled to end on April 29.

DYS, a division under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, is encouraging everyone to take part in the project.

The proceeds for the annual Penny Drive will go to a special children’s fund, which is used for victims of child abuse and neglect, children who are placed out of home or to foster care, troubled youth, and for other child abuse and neglect prevention projects.

The project also aims to motivate and encourage adults and children to volunteer and assist those in need.

“Each school, government department, and private business is encouraged to collect as many pennies as they can,” read the invitation from the youth services group.

Schoolchildren are also encouraged to speak with their parents about the Penny Drive to get them onboard.

Organizations in schools or in other sectors are advised to designate a representative to bring collected unwrapped pennies to the Bank of Guam branch in Garapan for counting. The bank will exchange the collected pennies with a cashier’s check that must be dropped off at the DYS office.

The school, government, and private sector groups with the highest collection of pennies will receive a “perpetual penny plaque” that will be kept by the winning group for a year, to be passed on to next year’s winning group.

Unlike last year, this year’s Penny Drive now has three categories: the school, government and private sector categories. The top three collectors from each category will receive plaques.
