Reservoir leak cause of water shortage in 16 villages
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has discovered a leak at a water reservoir supplying eight villages on Saipan, finally solving why there were water shortages in Fina Sisu, Kanat Tabla, Chalan Lau Lau, Oleai, Susupe, Chalan Kanoa, and Upper and Lower Garapan.
The good news is that CUC’s Water Division is working on the leak and said it will only take 16 hours to fix the side crack where the water is leaking. Once the reservoir is totally drained, contractors will immediately weld the crack. CUC would then slowly fill the reservoir back with water, at about 50 gallons per minute, from the 20 wells in Isley Field.
CUC said it will direct the release of the water to the closest villages, Kanat Tabla tomorrow morning, and Fina Sisu tomorrow afternoon.
CUC said the villages that receive water tomorrow, Thursday, are likely not to get it the following day, Friday. It said water delivery would not be stable until Saturday morning.
When the water reservoir is filled, it will be treated, and some of the water will be released Friday to the villages that didn’t get enough water the day before.
CUC anticipates that some customers may receive water before others, or at odd hours of the day, and that it would do all it can for the customers’ comfort, health, and safety.
CUC anticipates normal and, in general, improved operations, from the reservoir at the college, serving the southern residents after Friday. (PR)
