Private Joaquin V. Pangelinan of Tanapag, Saipan, can now proudly wear the distinctive pin of being a soldier in the U.S. Army after completing almost 14 weeks of demanding physical and tactical military training.

The U.S. Army held its Basic Training graduation on March 25 for Alpha Company 2/60th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Platoon at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Pangelinan, married to Tanya Barcinas Pangelinan, was among the more than 952 newly sworn American soldiers on that day.

Pangelinan is the son of Gonzalo Pangelinan and Alice A. Villagomez. Attending the ceremony was Pangelinan’s brother, Christopher, and WRO staffer Walter Villagomez, on behalf of Resident Representative Pete A. Tenorio.

“Private Pangelinan joins the ranks of many of our young men and women from the Northern Marianas who volunteer to serve the people of the United States and to safeguard our freedom,” said Tenorio.

During his training, Pangelinan received outstanding marks and commendation from his drill sergeants for exemplifying strong leadership skills, competency and discipline in training.

“The training was grueling and challenging at times, but I was glad to complete it, and ready to move on to the next level,” said Pangelinan.

He is now preparing to relocate to Virginia for several more weeks of Advanced Individual Training and for further training in his assigned military occupational skills.
