Saipan Lions Clubs collect trash for tsunami victims
About 30 members of two CNMI Lions Clubs—Saipan Fil-American Lions Club and Saipan Marianas Lions Club—braved the heat and occasional rain showers last Jan. 30 to collect trash that littered Beach Road from Hafa Adai Hotel in Garapan to Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio.
Although it is a yearly environmental project of the two clubs, this year’s event was also a fundraising activity for the victims of the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami that devastated parts of several Asian countries. The two Saipan clubs are joining Lions around the world in this fundraising effort.
In his message, the chair of Lions Clubs International Foundation, Dr. Tae-Sup Lee of Korea, said: “The tsunami disaster in South Asia has prompted a tremendous outpouring of support from Lions around the world, and Lions in the affected countries are working day and night to bring life-saving supplies to victims. Thanks to Lions, lives are being saved and communities will be rebuilt…. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and your continued support is desperately needed.”
Several supporters have pledge monetary contributions and it is estimated that the project would net over $1,000.
A major contributor is Tan Holdings Corp. The firm, through executive vice president Jerry Tan, pledged $5 for each bag of trash collected. With more than 160 bags of trash collected, Tan Holdings will be donating $800 for the tsunami relief fund.
Club presidents Ador Dimaano of SFALC and Tony San Jose of SMLC would like to thank all those who helped in the trash collection project: Tan Holdings for the major cash contribution; Multiline Supplies and Transamerica for the supplies; Lion Mario Mayuga and Lion Jess de los Santos for the snacks; Lion Sammy Enriquez and Lion Jun Canillo, project chairpersons; and all the Lions members and their families and friends who joined the trash collection. The clubs also like to thank Anthony Benavente and the Department of Lands and Natural Resources’ Parks & Recreation Division for their assistance in hauling the trash to the dump.
