Beachgoers warned of high surf
The Emergency Management Office, in conjunction with the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, would like to inform the public that the high surf advisory it issued over the weekend remains in effect until today.
In a statement issued Monday, the agencies said that moderate trade winds will prevail through Tuesday, then freshen by Wednesday. Otherwise, generally fair weather is expected.
They said that an east swell generated by persistent trade winds is producing high surf on northeast, east and southeast facing exposures.
“Computer model guidance indicates surf on northeast, east and southeast facing exposures will remain hazardous through at least Tuesday. Expect hazardous surf heights of 7 to 9 feet,” they said.
Tonight’s forecast predicts northeast winds of 15 knots and wind waves of 4 to 6 ft, with east swells of 3 to 4 ft.
Tomorrow’s forecast predicts east winds of 15 to 20 knots and wind waves of 4 to 6 ft, with east swell of 3 to 4 ft.
Due to the high risk of dangerous surf and strong rip currents, EMO is urging all beachgoers, fishermen, divers, swimmers, tourists and marine tour operators to avoid venturing near affected exposures.
On Thursday, northeast winds are predicted to reach 20 knots, with wind waves of 5 to 7 ft, and east swells of 3 ft.
For Friday, east winds are forecasted to reach 20 knots, with wind waves of 6 to 8 ft, and east swells of 3 to 5 ft.
