Various activities have been lined up by the Division of Environmental Quality to promote this year’s Environmental Awareness Week from April 17 to 23.

Gov. Juan N. Babauta will sign a proclamation tomorrow, April 13, to kick-off the event and to stress the importance of maintaining, preserving and protecting the environment.

This year’s campaign will revolve around the theme “Our Environment, Our Health, Our Future.”

“Every year we try to focus on a theme. It could be air, water, land or any problem that is associated with the environment. This year, we wanted to make it general so it’s the whole environment and how it affects our health and our future,” according to Julie dela Rosa, chairwoman of the EAW committee.

Dela Rosa said that the community is aware that they need to protect the environment. “It’s just a matter of reminding and training them how to protect our environment. And this is where our activities come in. We train them how important it is to pick up their trash, clean the beaches or even their surroundings.”

Activities lined up for the Environmental Awareness Week include:

* April 13 – Proclamation signing, DEQ Bldg. Gualo Rai

* April 19 – Environmental Expo, Chamorro Carolinian Village, Garapan

* April 21 – Environmental Expo, Garapan Street Market

* April 21 – Lagoon Cleanup, Civic Center

* April 22 – National Earth Day

* April 22 – Scuba Dive Cleanup

* April 23 – Islandwide Cleanup

The EAW committee and its members encourage the community to pitch in and help keep the island environment clean for the betterment of everyone’s health and the future.
