Seven teenagers praised for heroic act
Seven teenagers were recently praised for their bravery and heroism in risking their own lives to rescue six Chinese who were dragged by strong current at the Sugar Dock Channel nearly 10 months ago.
The 8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council adopted a series of resolutions commending Darrel Deleon Guerrero Salas, Kovin Salas Ogumoro, Roderick Duenas Hernandez, Caria Tudela, Darrol Atalig, Anthony Tenorio and Crystal Cabrera for their heroic act.
The incident occurred on a Sunday, June 27, 2004, at about 3:29pm. The Department of Public Safety Central received a call of a possible drowning behind Town House, south of Sugar Dock in Susupe.
At that time, off-duty officer Sergeant Joaquin “Jack” DLC. Salas was with his family members in the area when the incident took place. His son, Darrel, together with Ogumoro, Hernandez, Tudela, Atalig, Tenorio and Cabrera went into the water and rescued six of the nine Chinese individuals who were dragged into the sea by the strong current at the Sugar Dock Channel.
Responding police officers retrieved three other Chinese individuals from the water. The three were later pronounced dead by Dr. Leon Hart at the Commonwealth Health Center.
“Through their joint efforts, proper coordination and execution technique and strong commitment to risk their own lives to save another human being, [Ogumoro, Hernandez, Tudela, Atalig, Tenorio and Cabrera] saved six of the nine victims,” part of the resolutions read.
“The members of the Municipal Council and the people of the CNMI are extremely gratified [with the seven teenagers] for risking their own lives to save the lives of other human beings,” the resolutions add.
The resolutions were certified by municipal council chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
