San Antonio teams score wins in IVYBL
San Antonio Sixers I and 69ers continued to have their way on the hard court in the ongoing Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League.
Last night, Mike Eclevia nailed huge shots with time winding down for Sixers I, which defeated Garapan Rollers in a thrilling down-the-wire contest at the Koblerville Basketball Court, 45-40.
Neither team managed to break open the game as both matched each other nearly point for points in the first half, with G-Rollers posting an 11-8 lead after the first eight minutes and a 25-21 cushion at the break.
Both teams continued to fight for every loose ball, resulting in a variety of turnovers from both sides. Sixers I, behind the guns of Alvin Salas and Eclevia, inched closer and trailed by just a field goal with a stanza remaining in regulation, 34-36.
G-Rollers drew first blood in the fourth and led by as much four points, but Sixers I remained close and finally went ahead on a bucket by Eclevia, 38-36.
G-Rollers quickly knotted the score on a basket in the paint by Don Teregeyo.
The match featured another tie at 40-all before Tyrone Cabrera and Eclevia propelled Sixers I ahead.
G-Rollers had several chances at pulling even, however, costly turnovers hampered their efforts.
Eclevia and Salas led Sixers I with 16 and 11 points, while Jose Castro and Teregeyo paced G-Rollers with 14 and 11 points.
Meanwhile, the 69ers remained on top of the standings, improving to a league-best 5-0 with a lopsided 71-21 victory over the Matansa Sparks Monday evening at the As Matuis Basketball Court.
The 69ers dominated from the get-go, posting a 24-3 lead after eight minutes of play with Mart Pangelinan scoring 10 points, and cruised the rest of the way.
Bill Babauta finished with a game-high 19 points, while Pangelinan and little Roxanne Duenas punching in solid numbers with 12 and seven points, respectively.
Vince Iglecias led the Sparks with six points.
