Kuroda, Ito top XTERRA Sunset Trail Run

Before extreme triathletes took part in the 4th XTERRA Saipan Championship and XTERRA Sport courses, Kengo Kuroda and Noriali Ito raised their hands in triumph after winning the XTERRA 5K/10K Sunset Trail Run Friday evening.

Kuroda placed first overall in the 10K, topping the 30-39 age group with a time of 28.34, while Ito outran everyone in the 5K competition, finishing in 15.46 to top the 30-39 age group.

Following Kuroda in the 10K were Jung Young Kim and Chang Whan Jang, who posted times of 30.00 and 35.52, respectively.

Kelly Johnson was the top female finisher for the 20-29 age group, crossing the finish line in 36.00, while Mark McDonald topped the men’s corner in 37.21.

Cathy Ton was the other female 20-29 finisher and sixth overall at 38.37, while longtime Saipan roadrunner Monica Yamaguchi placed seventh overall and second in the 50-59 category with a time of 39.21.

Fellow roadrunner Daniel Calvo also had a sterling performance, reaching the finish line in 40.44 to win the men’s 40-49 category and place eighth overall, while Mark Ferris followed and finished just 16 seconds later. Herano Imperial capped the top 10 and placed third in the men’s 20-29 division after storming through the course in 44.39.

For their part, Madison Smith competed and won the 10-19 crown in 45.01, while Rhee Gyung saw action in the 50-59 age category and completed the race in 46.11.

Meanwhile, 32 other athletes participated in the 5K, with Takao Matsui finishing just 12 seconds behind Ito at 15.58 and Takamasa Hashimoto finishing in the overall top three with a time of 16.29.

Takamasa Hashimoto and Yoshi Suzuki placed third and fourth overall in times of 16.29 and 16.56. All four mentioned runners were in the 30-39 age group.

R.J. Knecht and Crosby Schultz were the youngest competitors, entering the 1-9 age group and finishing in 23.27 and 23.37, respectively.

All age group winners were presented with medals during the awards ceremony held shortly after the end of the 10K at Micro Beach.
